Ohia Lehua in Pele's Glow
Sacred ohia lehua trees silhouetted by the light of Pele, goddess of fire and volcanos. The light and gasses are emanating from a 700-foot wide lava lake inside Halema'uma'u crater at Kilauea volcano, which has been erupting continuously for more than 30 years. These trees, which are native to Hawaii, can close their stomata when volcanic pollution is high, essentially holding their breath for up to three weeks at a time.
