A tree clings to the edge of the pali (cliff) in Waipi'o Valley on the Big Island of Hawaii. Ho'opa'a literally means to make fast, to keep, or to memorize. In hula, it is a person who has learned oli (chant) and mele (dance) and is now ready to lead others in its performance. They are keepers of the traditional Hawaiian culture.
